It is not a coincidence that April’s 1st has been named the International Bird Day. Spring migration “starts” in mid March and becomes more intense in the beginning of April. Of course migration timing is different in different corners of the world, but this period matches with intense migration period in Armenia.
Right now a strong raptor migration is underway and many raptors are passing through Armenia to Europe such as Long-legged and Steppe Buzzards, Pallid and Montague’s Harriers, Eurasian and Levant Sparrowhawks. Bird of 2014 Year – the Hoopoe is also back to its breeding places and can be seen in suburbs of Yerevan.
Migration is one of the miracles of nature and not only because it is mystical and breathtaking, but simply because it signifies the life cycle.
