In drawing a summary to the “Armenia’s Wild Birds” Photo competition which was announced earlier this year, on 12 November ASPB has organized a small award ceremony to which the photographers identified as winners in the competition have been invited. As an opening part of the ceremony, the winners were introduced to the evolutionary path lived by ASPB, its past achievements and current conservation work.
We would like to recall that the aim of the Photo Competition was to promote the public awareness about birdwatching and raise a live interest in birds and wildlife in general. The competition was open to all professional and amateur wildlife photographers based in Armenia. Photographs posted for the competition had to be original and created solely by the author. A participating photographer could submit up to 3 photographs where only one photograph could be presented in ONE category.
The Photo Competition was announced for the following 3 categories:
1. Birds: Behavior. Submissions for this category should have conveyed the photographer’s ability to capture dynamic and «in-action» moments (flight, race, etc) of the life of wild birds in nature. The winner in this category was Berta Martirosyan, who captured two Armenian gulls during their dynamic flight.
2. Birds in the Natural Habitat. Submissions in this category had to focus specially on general artistry: perception of the composition and color balance of the photo. Two winners have been announced in this category:
a. Vahram Petrosyan (1st prize) and his beautiful image of European Bee-eater
b. Ani Yenokyan (2nd prize) with a photograph of Eurasian Scops-Owl
3. Birds of the City. In this category, the entry had to display how birds adapt to human environment and how they live side by side with Man (in urban settings). Unfortunately, photographic submissions in this category were not compliant with the announced quality features and rules of the competition, which is why there were no winners in this category.
The professional jury was composed of both local and international experts who travelled to Armenia multiple times and are well introduced to the country's wildlife and nature. The winners were awarded by ASPB with special gift cards which were kindly sponsored by the VENTO outdoor gear shop, where they could acquire outdoor gear and outdoor clothing for climbing, hiking, skiing, mountaineering and backpacking.
ASPB extends its gratitude to VENTO administration for cooperation and support of the wildlife photo competition.
